A cloak of darkness wrapped around the forest, obscuring all previously visible paths. Jenai glanced about frantically, listening fearfully to the sounds of the woods. Was that a bear? A lion? Could she leave?

Trying to shake off her Sense of Doom, Jenai laughed at herself for such ridiculous fears. Bears and Lions were creatures of mith, their true forms lost amidst centuries of storytelling, as so many others of the Earth's original creatures before Lady Light and her Glows took control over Earth, now known as Luz. Jenai scolded herself again for losing concentration in the midst of her escape. She scanned the area with renewed vigor for any signs of those... those Things, those hideous beasts she could not even bear to think the name of...

And suddenly the bush behind her started shaking again. By instincts, she turned around and waited for it to come, her hands uncontrollably shaking. All to suddenly, a dark figure appeared, and as it came closer, the more it became recognizable. And then, she realized it wasn't an "it." It was her childhood friend, Cameron. Cameron's eyes opened wide at the sight of her, as hers did when she saw him. "Jenai" she heard from his mouth, and relief colored his expression. He edged closer to her, until his hands managed to wrap around her protectively. For a second she felt safe. But was she really?

Not wanting to give up the security of being with her friend, she tried to block out the Sense of Doom that was growing ever stronger. Without her willing it to, Jenai's mind flashed back to the gut wrenching scene that had occured only hours before, her thoughts still swirling from the shock of it... She saw Cameron lying motionless on the cold ground... She heard someone yell at her to run, to escape and leave him... She saw him bleeding out his purple life blood while the Things attacked him over and over... She felt the Old Crone's cackling voice pulse through her body as the dreaded Prophecy predicted 17 years ago on her birthday slowly came true...

Still wrapped in her friend's embrace, it suddenly doesnt seem as comforting as it had moments before. How is Cameron alive again? She had clearly watched him die. He couldn't have lost that much blood, and lived. Jenai's fear-garbled mind wondered what kind of sick joke it was when Cameron's body suddenly morphed into that of one of them.

And one of them he was. As she had finally, but temporarily, recovered from desparation and fright, she finally began to see him. And that was worse than seeing him die. How could the one--the only one--she thought she could ever trust right now be one of them, the Things that want to take away her life? The Things that took away her whole family? Her whole home? And she then realized that his arms were not wrapped around her tense body merely for the overwhelming powers cause by the deceiving feelings of reunification....

However, he still did not attack her, though he must have felt the sudden change in her mood. Frightened that he may try to harm her, she pushed aside her wonderings and broke free of his embrace. His confused expression wrenched her heart, but she thought that it must be a trick... without allowing herself to hesitate any longer, she punched him with the force that would have knocked a human unconcious. Cursing her stupidity, as Things were much stronger than humans, she braced herself for his attack - but it did not come. He lay on the forest ground, as suceptible as he had been as a human, leaving Jenai to deal with her swirling thoughts which asked impossible questions that no one had the answers to.

Why didn't he attack? Why did he act so? It made no sense! A thing lay within a few feet of her not even trying to attack! Come to think of it, when had she ever seen a thing be confused? Jenai sent a quick prayer to the Goddess for guidence and understanding.
